Making of the Butterfly Ball

A set of interviews with Ronnie Dio, Eddie Hardin, Ray Fenwick, Alan Aldridge (author of the book) surfaced on Youtube some time ago.

Subsequent to this documentary, Deep Purple did indeed tour with Ronnie Dio and we had a wonderful time.

I would like to point out that Ronnie, being the straightforward, honest man that he is, told me on the first night how thoroughly pissed off he was that his name wasn’t on his first gold record.  I told him I’d had no idea at the time and completely understood his feelings.  I unashamedly apologised.  Back then, I didn’t think about things like that, the record company just printed it simply as Roger Glover and Guests – being the umbrella name for the entire project.  I should have thought a bit more.  I probably never imagined that it would ever be on a gold record!   Of course I recognise that Ronnie’s vocal lifted the whole song to another level, an invaluable contribution.  He gave a performance that should have had more recognition.

I am huge fan of his voice and always have been, having worked with him on all three of the Elf albums I produced.  He is undoubtedly one of the best singers I’ve ever heard, let alone had the privilege of working with.  I was horrified that I had hurt the very man whose friendship I valued so highly.  He was big enough to accept my apology and I’m so relieved that we cleared the air and went on to have a great time together.   I love him and wish him all the best of health for the New Year.
