Ioannis Vasilopoulis R.I.P.
Artwork for album covers is frequently produced by people one rarely meets as a musician, meaning that all one knows about them is a name and their artwork. Ioannis Vasilopoulis was a first-rate graphic artist and designer whose studio in Orange, Connecticut was not far from where I lived, so I worked with him and his brother Theodoros on three Deep Purple albums along with several tour programmes.
To illustrate Abandon was a challenge and Ioannis’s solution was brilliant. It was a privilege to be a part of his creative process. He was inspirational and shared many tricks of the trade as we continued to work together on Rapture of The Deep, Bananas, and all the accompanying tour programs. I fondly remember those sessions which were full of humour and good times.
I am saddened to hear of his passing. My condolences go to Theodoros and the rest of his family.
