“The Mask” Lyrics

Divided World

Shaking with anger, she moves like a hurricane
there’s another horizon, but you’ll never leave her.
She’s black and she’s white now, wrong and she’s right again
you can’t see the reason, but it doesn’t matter.

…and the laughing and the crying are the same thing
to the joker who is sitting on the wall,
…and the sadness and gladness come together
like a brother and a sister to us all.

It’s a divided world, it’s always going to be
some people close their eyes, there’s not so much to see
it’s a divided world, and that’s no shame
it’s all a compromise, you can’t explain.

Time and the season change like the weatherman
we’re up in the slipstream, but we’re down in the basement.
A duel of power, love and the sacrifice
they’re sharing the same road but in different directions

…and the laughing and the crying are the same thing
to the joker who is sitting on the wall,
And the sadness and the gladness come together
like a brother and a sister to us all.

It’s a divided world, it’s always going to be
some people close their eyes, there’s not so much to see
it’s a divided world, and that’s no shame
it’s all a compromise, you can’t explain.

Getting Stranger

Can you feel it now there’s something strange,
got you hooked while you looked away?
Can you feel it now there’s something strange,
got you hooked while you looked away?
No hesitation on your way back down,
look for help but there’s none around,
got to get it but you don’t know why
got to get it ‘cos it gets you high,
it’s getting stranger…

You thought you knew what you were meant to be,
the sun was setting at a quarter to three.
You thought you knew what you were meant to be,
the sun was setting at a quarter to three.
In the casino you make a roll,
don’t look back or you’ll be back in the hole
something’s happening and you loose control,
something’s happening and you loose control,
it’s getting stranger…

Something’s knocking on your window pane
get it down before it gets away.
Something’s knocking on your window pane
get it down before it gets away.
It’s the rhythm of another drum,
can’t be over if it’s just begun.
Now you know you’re not the only one,
Now you know you’re not the only one,
it’s getting stranger…

The Mask

It’s later on a Wednesday, the sun is going down,
I’m standing naked by a swimming pool, there’s no one around,
my imagination wanders back, red dust is always there
we lay together in the jungle, and love was in the air.

As I dive into the water, both time and motion freeze,
I’m hanging there suspended like a feather in the breeze,
below is your reflection, like an image from the past
but I can’t be sure if it’s really you ‘cos you’re wearing a tribal mask.

Take it off…take of the mask

I have no way of knowing how long I must remain
dangling like a statue, and whispering your name,
but suddenly it’s over, and I begin to fall
but the swimming pool is empty now, no water there at all.

I find myself in a room, empty and it’s bare
with nothing but a mirror, and I know you’re waiting there,
I’m looking for an answer but I don’t know who to ask
I see my own reflection, but this time, I got the mask.

I can’t take it, I can’t take it

Take it off…take of the mask

Fake It

Never look and you’ll never see
what it is or what it seems to be
is it true or misunderstood
it doesn’t look like you thought it should

Beggerman or the parliament
different reasons but the same intent
looking for a way to change your mind
you never see what they keep behind

What about the working man?
trying to make a living the best he can
and if he can’t does he give a damn?
all I got to do is fake it, fake it.

Here he come a television man
he’s so cool, what a perfect tan
doesn’t even know what he’s talking about
this is something we can live without

What about the working man?
trying to make a living the best he can
and if he can’t does he give a damn?
all I got to do is fake it, fake it.

Dancin’ Again

Seems so long I don’t know when
been to the wall and back again
yesterday was filled with sorrow
fighting to escape tomorrow
liberation…it’s a new sensation
look at me Ma, I’m dancin’ again.

Countdown zero, engines on
cloud of dust and I’ll be gone
don’t know where so don’t you wonder
somewhere no one’s got my number
aggravated…it’s overrated
look at me Ma, I’m dancin’ again.

Don’t look back, there’s nothing there
I can’t remember, just don’t care
I’m ready to ride a lonesome highway
honey are you going my way?
unattended…it’s recommended
look at me Ma, I’m dancin’ again.

You’re So Remote

Your smile is a mystery
but I can use my imagination
no time to define the roles we play together
or is that the golden rule?
there’s a cry in the night and it’s trying to say
look ahead in the distance
is there any other way?
oh, you’re so remote

No time for a memory
but it could use a little exploration
carry on ’til it’s gone and there’s nothing left to sever
and then you’re laughing at a fool
there’s a cry in the night and then you turn away
look ahead in the distance
is there any other way?
oh, you’re so remote

Hip Level

Ticket to the title page
shadows on the wall, someone’s on the stage
ever heard a better sound?
never let a side slip get you down,

Glad arena’s solid light
honey dipped figures dancing in the night
taking of the hat and coat
taking up, taking off, rocking the boat,

Don’t fight it, or be uptight
if you wanna take another bite
all you got to do is think hip level

She’s another moody guy
looking too hard, feeling kind of shy
cat’s chasing mouse again
never the beginning, never the end,

Don’t fight it, or be uptight
if you wanna take another bite
all you got to do is think hip level

Don’t doubt it, it’s understood
if it’s moving, you know it’s good
all you got to do is think hip level

Don’t Look Down

I’m making my own bed
after all the feelings you thought stuck inside my head
the cost of staying where you are
it’s more than all the moons between you and the nearest star
Don’t look down

To be a stranger one more time
is more than I should ask for but at least I know it’s mine
me on a tight rope I should be
moving to a dancer who forever shall be free
Don’t look down

Don’t look the other way
it’s nothing but a shadow who had nothing more to say
and the cost of moving on
is nothing to the dreamer whose forgotten dreams are gone
Don’t look down
