Twelve Months Gone

Twelve months gone again!

And where did I go? On the road, that’s where. The road that leads to your door. To many doors; stage doors, closed doors, dressing room doors, hotel corridors, van doors, bedroom doors – dreaming through that revolving door of time.

And what did I see? I saw sunsets and sunrises, spotlights and smoke machines, take-offs and landings, love and music, hands in the air and constellations of smart phones. And I saw home as a calendar date, the warmth of welcome when I got there.

And what did I hear? I heard the roar of the crowd, the synchronicity of souls, questions and answers to other questions, the poetry of complaint, the rumble of the road, the joy and the hassle, laughing and crying – the same release, as Joni said.

And who touched my life? RIP; Chuck Berry, Tom Petty, Fats Domino, Malcolm Young, Walter Becker, Glen Campbell, Greg Allman, Butch Trucks, Chris Cornell. And my good friend Ian Hansford – DP’s first roadie.

And whom did I meet? I met a cornucopia of people, some for the only time, some to be seen again, a multi-hued parade of old friends and new, and all those in between that touched my mind.

Thank you for these twelve months, for the many birthday greetings I couldn’t reply to, the kind words. And for making my 2017 as spectacular as it could have been.

Good luck for 2018.

I was born in Aberystwyth when man reached for the moon and DP MK2 arrived on stage. Have seen you multiple times over the decades, but flying over to London with my 9 year old son and 6 year old daughter in November 2017 for their first Purple gig in the O2 was pretty special. DP still making and playing great, great music. My Irish wife, who plays the Harp told me after that he favourite part was your bass solo. Thank you Roger.

But most of all I thank you for being a musician who still has the desire to progress, the stamina and dedication to keep going. Thank you for making life better with your music 🤗❤️🍀🎶

And so, as you have seen not enough times yet in 2017, all doors are wide open for you. Thanks for the amazing music, and can’t help making a bold line under the fantastic InFinite album, from which we had the pleasure to listen “Bird of Prey” live in Sao Paulo on Dec 13th, my 15th DP concert, but the very first of my 15 yr old boy – who loved every bar of the concert ( and guest that, Bird of Prey is his favorite from the album, so, perfect…) . Wish you 2018 best year of your life, enjoy it !!

Deserved comments Roger, first saw the band in Leicester, 1970 I think, a mere schoolboy. Think its fair to say my jaw dropped then…At its best, the band is unreservedly, the best…the lineup changes only paint a rich tapestry and the longevity is a joy to behold…hope 2018 brings more new and interesting opportunities..All the best.

Happy New Year, Dear Roger. And may life be with you!
You put some warmth back into an otherwise rather cold year for me.

    Hi Roger,
When I was 15 (in 1973) you were kind enough to send me your signature via Simon Robinson (Newly formed DP app’ society).
I wanted to know when your Butterfly Ball project would be released. You appreciated my asking and said you were working on it. I’ve bought that album for many of the children in my family over the years – who all love it. I guess it would be a huge undertaking but feel it would make a wonderful theatrical production and/or animated film. I know you have considered this.
I’ve been a fan since the age of 12 and like many fans I’ve had your music supporting me throughout the ups and downs of life. Just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Will never forget seeing Purple in 1972 at Greens Playhouse Glasgow and a few weeks ago at The Hydro – and all the times in between. Best wishes for 2018.

Thank you Roger for all that you do. My musical life changed on my 16th birthday when a friend bought me Machine Head. We’re now both in our way 60’s and met up for the first time in a decade at your Birmingham concert – old friends re-united by a love if your music. Three night later at Cardiff I sat with my son and daughter and marvelled again. Thank you so much!
